Getting to Finland

Most travelers fly into Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL), the main international gateway with direct connections across Europe, Asia, and North America via Finnair. For Lapland, connect through Helsinki to Rovaniemi, Ivalo, or Kittilä. Ferries from Stockholm, Tallinn, and Travemünde are a scenic alternative — the overnight Helsinki–Stockholm route is a Baltic classic.

Getting around

Trains (VR)

Fast, comfortable, and punctual. Night trains from Helsinki to Rovaniemi even carry cars — book sleeper cabins early in winter.

Domestic flights

Finnair and Norwegian connect Helsinki to Lapland in about 1.5 hours — huge time-saver versus 12+ hours by rail.

Long-distance buses

OnniBus and Matkahuolto reach smaller towns rail doesn't — cheap but slower.

Rental car

Best for lakeland cabin trips and Lapland aurora chasing. Winter tires are mandatory Dec–Feb; watch for reindeer on Lapland roads.

City transport

Helsinki's HSL trams, metro, and ferries all use one app (HSL). Suomenlinna ferry is included in the day ticket.

Helsinki — Kamppi / Design District

Central, walkable, packed with cafés, saunas, and Design District shops. Best base for a first-timer.

Porvoo

Cobbled old town 50 km east of Helsinki — perfect overnight for a slower riverside vibe.

Finnish Lakeland (Savonlinna, Mikkeli)

Rent a lakeside mökki (cabin) with a private sauna. Peak season is July for warm swims and midnight sun.

Rovaniemi

'Ruska' foliage lights up Lapland, aurora season starts, and prices drop. Pack layers and rain gear.

Winter (Dec–Mar)

Peak Lapland season: snow, huskies, reindeer, and the best Northern Lights odds. Expect –20 °C days in the north.

Spring (Apr–May)

Shoulder season — snow lingers in Lapland, Helsinki thaws. Quiet and cheap, but lakes may still be frozen.

Culture & etiquette

Silence is comfortable — Finns don't fill every pause in conversation.
Sauna is nude and gender-separated; shower before entering and keep phones out.
Take shoes off when entering someone's home.
Tipping isn't expected — service is included, though rounding up is appreciated.
Queue respectfully and give people personal space, especially at bus stops.

Safety & health

Finland is consistently among the safest countries in the world — violent crime is very rare.
Tap water is excellent everywhere; skip the bottled water.
In Lapland winter, frostbite is the real risk — cover exposed skin and check forecasts before aurora hunts.
Emergency number is 112 across the EU, including Finland.

How many days do you need in Finland?

7–10 days is the sweet spot: 2–3 days in Helsinki, 1 in Porvoo or the archipelago, and 3–5 days in Lapland or the Lakeland. Aurora trips need at least 3 nights up north for a reasonable chance at clear skies.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Finland?

Late August through early April, with peak odds December to March. You need dark, cloudless nights above the Arctic Circle — Saariselkä, Levi, and Ivalo are the classic bases.

Is Finland expensive?

Yes, comparable to Norway and Denmark. Restaurants and alcohol are pricey; supermarket meals, tap water, and free saunas at your accommodation help a lot. Budget around €150 per day mid-range.

Do I need to speak Finnish?

No — English is spoken almost universally, especially in Helsinki and tourist areas. Learning 'kiitos' (thank you) is a nice gesture.

Is Finland good for families with kids?

Excellent — very safe, clean, stroller-friendly, and full of kid-magnet experiences: Santa Claus Village, husky farms, Moomin World in Naantali, and forest cabins.
