Ancient ruins, whitewashed islands, and turquoise waters ideal for island hopping.

Greece blends history with island bliss. Athens' Acropolis anchors the mainland, while the Cyclades and Ionian islands offer beaches, tavernas, and sunset views. The trick is balancing culture and island time.

Getting to Greece

Athens (ATH) is the main hub. In summer, direct flights land in Santorini (JTR), Mykonos (JMK), Crete (HER/CHQ), and Rhodes (RHO). For island hopping, plan to fly into one island and out of another via Athens.

Getting around

Ferries

The backbone of Greek travel — Blue Star (slow, comfortable), Seajets and Golden Star (fast, pricier). Book June–August weeks ahead.

Domestic flights

Aegean and Sky Express fly Athens–Santorini/Mykonos in 45 minutes — worth it in high season.

Rental car / ATV

Best on bigger islands (Crete, Naxos, Milos). ATVs are popular but check your travel insurance.

Athens metro

Fast, clean, and connects the airport, Acropolis, and port of Piraeus.

Where to stay

Athens — Plaka or Koukaki

Walking distance to the Acropolis with tavernas and rooftop bars.

Santorini — Oia vs. Fira

Oia for iconic sunsets and quiet luxury; Fira for nightlife and lower prices.

Mykonos — Chora or Ornos

Chora for the old-town buzz; Ornos for family-friendly beach access.

Crete — Chania

Venetian old harbor, gorge hikes nearby, and less package-tourist feel than Heraklion.

Santorini for views, Mykonos for beach clubs, Naxos for balance (beaches + villages + food), Crete for variety and history.

Is Greece expensive?

Cheaper than most of Western Europe, but Santorini and Mykonos are noticeably pricier than the mainland and other islands, especially in summer.

Do I need cash in Greece?

Cards work in most restaurants and shops, but keep small cash for tavernas, kiosks (periptero), and rural islands.
