Destination guide
Ancient ruins, whitewashed islands, and turquoise waters ideal for island hopping.
Greece blends history with island bliss. Athens' Acropolis anchors the mainland, while the Cyclades and Ionian islands offer beaches, tavernas, and sunset views. The trick is balancing culture and island time.

Athens (ATH) is the main hub. In summer, direct flights land in Santorini (JTR), Mykonos (JMK), Crete (HER/CHQ), and Rhodes (RHO). For island hopping, plan to fly into one island and out of another via Athens.
The backbone of Greek travel — Blue Star (slow, comfortable), Seajets and Golden Star (fast, pricier). Book June–August weeks ahead.
Aegean and Sky Express fly Athens–Santorini/Mykonos in 45 minutes — worth it in high season.
Best on bigger islands (Crete, Naxos, Milos). ATVs are popular but check your travel insurance.
Fast, clean, and connects the airport, Acropolis, and port of Piraeus.
Walking distance to the Acropolis with tavernas and rooftop bars.
Oia for iconic sunsets and quiet luxury; Fira for nightlife and lower prices.
Chora for the old-town buzz; Ornos for family-friendly beach access.
Venetian old harbor, gorge hikes nearby, and less package-tourist feel than Heraklion.
Budget
€60–90
Hostels or studios, gyro lunches, ferry deck class, and free beaches.
Mid-range
€140–220
Boutique hotels, taverna dinners with wine, one boat day per island.
Luxury
€500+
Caldera-view suites in Santorini, private catamaran charters, fine dining in Mykonos.
Rough per-person, per-day estimates excluding flights.
10–14 days for Athens + 2 islands. 7 days works for Athens + Santorini. Island hopping ideally has 3+ nights per island to justify the ferry time.
Santorini for views, Mykonos for beach clubs, Naxos for balance (beaches + villages + food), Crete for variety and history.
Cheaper than most of Western Europe, but Santorini and Mykonos are noticeably pricier than the mainland and other islands, especially in summer.
Cards work in most restaurants and shops, but keep small cash for tavernas, kiosks (periptero), and rural islands.
